MARTIN SCORSESE PRESENTS GOMORRAH
OPENING IN TORONTO ON MARCH 13 AT THE CUMERLAND THEATRE AND ON MARCH 20 AT THE AMC INTERCHANGE, WOODBRIDGE
E1 Entertainment Canada is pleased to announce that GOMORRAH, Matteo Garrone’s gritty adaptation of Roberto Saviano’s exposé of Italy’s most famous Mafia organization, the Neapolitan Camorra, will open in Toronto on March 13, in Ottawa on March 27 and in Vancouver on April 3.
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival and of five European Film Awards, including Best Film, GOMORRAH was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and was Italy’s official submission for the Academy Awards. A visceral, up-close look at the pervasive influence of violence and corruption in Naples, GOMORRAH skillfully interweaves five storylines centred on the crime-ridden suburbs of Scampia and Secondigliano, cumulatively building a kaleidoscopic portrait of present-day Naples.
In each vignette, Garrone closely follows the daily routines of his characters, ordinary people who are drawn into the Mafia’s business operations, sometimes willingly, sometimes not. Resembling news reports from a war zone, we watch as events unfold, relationships and loyalties shift, and betrayal and violence become inevitable. Collectively these small narratives amount to a devastating condemnation of a criminal empire that extends to the furthest reaches of society.
Being true-to-life was important to Garrone. He served as his own chief camera operator, which allowed him to create a feeling of verité by getting as close to his subjects, as necessary. He shot on location, placing many scenes in a massive concrete apartment complex. Said Garrone: “The raw material I had to work with when shooting Gomorrah was so visually powerful that I merely filmed it in as straightforward a way as possible, as if I were a passerby who happened to find myself there by chance. I thought this was the most effective way of reproducing the feelings I experienced during the time I spent making the film.
Roberto Saviano’s international best seller caused such a great sensation when it was published in Italy in 2006 that the author was forced into hiding, and remains under round-the-clock security protection to this day.
Writer-director Matteo Garrone was born in Rome, where he attended art school. He worked as an assistant cameraman and dedicated several years to painting. His background reveals itself through the beautiful, haunting images and painterly quality of Gomorrah. His debut feature, Land in the Middle (Terra di Mezzo)(1997), won the Special Jury Award and the Cipputi Award at the Turin Film Festival. Other features include Guests (Ospiti) (1998), Roman Summer (L’Estate romana) (2002), The Embalmer (L’Imbalsamatore) (2002), and First Love (Primo Amore) (2004).
